Authentic Leadership
Pope Francis is one of the leaders who exhibit authentic leadership. Pope Francis is a spiritual leader heading the Catholic Church, which has over 1.3 billion people all over the world (Krames, 2015). One of his missions is to transform the Catholic Church image through authentic leadership and application of strategies aimed at increasing trust in the Catholic leadership increasing the number of followers in his organization (Krames, 2015). Through the many strategies being implemented, this has impacted a high population who have been influenced by his behavior and leadership styles (Krames, 2015). Pope Francis exhibits authentic leadership by bringing reforms into the church, which change the views about the Catholic Church. He has participated in conversations, which are different from the normal church perceptions, which include conversations about climate change and poverty (Krames, 2015).

He has also visited Israel and Cuba showing that he is not a leader afraid to face and address crises rather he is part of finding solutions to pressing matters. By fighting for human rights, he shows that he values equality (Krames, 2015). Reaching out to non-Catholics shows the desire to be open, which promotes honest relationships with all individuals even to those outside the organization circle (Krames, 2015). This creates a good environment for those intending to join his congregation. By being open on controversial topics, Pope Francis has shown the value and importance of open communication, which is important in leadership roles. Open communication encourages followers to share ideas and solve pressing issues affecting the group and a leader who is open to communication can use this important tool to grow and establish his/her followers (Northouse, 2013).
The role of authentic leadership in creating trust and followership is creating and supporting individuals on the benefits of following ethical morals which in result impacts their behaviors with other members in the organization (Northouse, 2013). Authentic leadership also enhances integrity and openness, which improves trust. Authentic leadership can improve organizations as it makes members to become loyal to the leadership of an organization (Northouse, 2013). Authentic leadership also enhances transparency and fairness, which improves communication. This helps in addressing issues and in the decision-making process (Northouse, 2013).
