Implementation into Practice
Implementation into Practice
The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ)
The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality is an agency within the Department of Health and Human Services in the United States, which was established to improve the effectiveness and quality of healthcare service delivery in the United States (The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality et al., 2013). The agency has the responsibility of developing important guidelines in the healthcare sector and provides support to healthcare facilities in the achievement of healthcare goals. This has been achieved by the use of research to make healthcare recommendations by the use of evidence-based research (The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality et al., 2013). The agency performs a comparative effectiveness research, which is a comparison of current healthcare interventions in order to determine which interventions are best and have more benefits. This provides information on the type of treatment method, which is more successful depending on the type of population and other factors (The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality et al., 2013).
Integration of Behavioral Healthcare
One of the practices implemented by the AHRG is behavioral health integration, which is also known as collaborative care or integrated care (The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, 2018). This practice is aimed to improve the delivery of healthcare services as well as reducing the costs of administering health care services. This practice was developed to aid healthcare professionals in the primary care units to identify and integrate professional practices in the system, which are important in developing a reliable workforce (The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, 2018). This practice was developed after a careful observation and interviewing high performing healthcare organizations. Healthcare professionals with the responsibilities of providing primary care were involved in the research, which enabled the researchers to gain a deeper insight on the professional healthcare practices. These practices can be integrated into primary care to improve the delivery of healthcare services (Feinstein, Connelly, & Feinstein, 2017).
Some of the recommendations included the role of teamwork in accomplishing healthcare goals in an organization and focusing on the community’s needs. This has helped the organization in continuously improving the delivery of integrated care (Feinstein, Connelly, ; Feinstein, 2017). Some of the strategies implemented to help in the implementation of this practice is innovation opportunities which allow for better and improved strategies which help in the accomplishment of the desired goals (Feinstein, Connelly, ; Feinstein, 2017). For organizations to implement this practice successfully into their system, they must also invest in quality improvement personnel to help in guiding, provide good leadership, and monitoring the process. There must also be accountability of all stakeholders involved in the practice. All members involved in the delivery of primary care must also participate in the practice for the successful integration of the practice (Feinstein, Connelly, ; Feinstein, 2017).
The Extent of the Implementation of the Practice
The integration of behavioral healthcare plays a major role in the processes, actions, and outcomes determined in the healthcare process. The structures implemented can be used to identify the performance of a team working collaboratively (The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, 2018). This practice has also been integrated in all the different departments in the healthcare sector due to the benefit of reduced costs, which is a major goal of all organizations (The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, 2018). This approach also enhances the lifestyle and health status of patients making it to be adopted in all departments. The use of evidence-based practices has had positive results in the healthcare industry. This is because the practices have been proven to work effectively and efficiently to achieve the desired goals (The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, 2018).
A large number of healthcare professionals have also been trained on how to integrate this practice into their roles and responsibilities (The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, 2018). This practice is also being used to create strong teams, which are important in all organizations as healthcare services are a result of different performance in the different departmental units. This practice has impacted the different dimensions of healthcare delivery including the staff members where the practice is used to fulfill the organization’s mission and vision (The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, 2018).
The Barriers to Implementation into Practice
Some of the barriers to implementation into practice include communication challenges. Communication is very important in the implementation of any practice involving a large number of participants (Raney & American Psychiatric Association, 2015). Communication challenges may be faced during complex situations, which may require support and guidelines from other parties. Communication is also important in encouraging the participants on the successful implementation of the practice and the benefits associated with the successful implementation of the practice (Raney & American Psychiatric Association, 2015). Another barrier to the implementation of the practice is the requirement of qualified personnel to help in guiding and monitoring the implementation of the practice.
For the successful integration of the practice, there must be skilled and qualified personnel who may be difficult or expensive to access (Raney & American Psychiatric Association, 2015). The management of group dynamics requires skilled personnel. The resources required to establish the necessary structures might also be limited affecting the implementation of the practice (Raney & American Psychiatric Association, 2015). For this practice to be successful implemented, there must be the required structure which might be costly to set up. Since healthcare department have a certain budget to their operations, accessing extra funding for other practices may be a challenge (Raney & American Psychiatric Association, 2015).
Ways to Overcome the Barriers
Some of the barriers may be overcome by seeking extra funding from private and other non-governmental organizations which have been set up to help in the accomplishment of healthcare goals (Deborah et al., 2015). Lack of adequate funding is a major problem to many organizations in implementing important practices into their systems. This is because most of the practices require setting up of structures and skilled personnel to help in setting up the process and providing monitoring services to the process (Deborah et al., 2015).
Support to members also requires financial resources, which may be a challenge to access if not previously planned in the budget. The communication process can be improved to enable the continuous flow of information between members, which is important in an organization (Deborah et al., 2015). Information and ideas flow through communication channels, which enable any arising issues to be addressed effectively and rapidly. Having proper and effective communication channels will help the organization in better coordination and collection of feedback, which is important in implementing a new practice into the organization (Deborah et al., 2015).
Resources Available On the Selected Site to Inform Translation
Resources available to inform translation include guidelines, which are systematically developed steps to help healthcare practitioners in making informed decisions based on certain situations. These guidelines are based on reviewed evidence and have had a positive impact on the quality of decisions regarding healthcare delivery systems (The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, 2018). There are also evidence-based practices available, which are regularly updated to ensure that the current best evidence is available to help in making more effective decisions concerning patient care (The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, 2018).
The integration of evidence-based research in the decision process results in improved patient care. Evidence-based practice provides the users with the best practices to achieve certain healthcare goals. Organizations, which have also integrated in the practice, have a variety of tools, which have been successful in the implementation process. These organizations have also videos to help in providing effective strategies and more information to organizations implementing the practice into their systems (The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, 2018).
