In 1914 after his wife died, Wilson married Edith Bolling Galt. Woodrow Wilson was in office during WW1 when he started conscription of all able body men aged 21 to 30. The military force to 140,000 and the American Expeditionary Force was created. The first 14,000 troops were sent to France on June 26, 1917 through the western front at the port of Saint Nazaire. The troops were welcomed by the French. By September 12, 1918 almost 24 million men were registered, with 4 million men drafted to serve in the war overseas. They defended the western front and successfully launched attacks and defeated enemy positions. Over 200,000 African-Americans served the military during Woodrow. Wilson’s presidency, however, because of segregation they had to fight alongside the French army.
