LaRonica Kelly, M.Ed, LPC—Professional Disclosure Statement
As a school counselor at Pike Road School, I provide counseling services to all students 9-12. This professional disclosure statement describes my professional background, philosophy, theoretical and counseling approaches, and confidentiality.
I have been employed as a professional school counselor with Pike Road School since August of 2020. In May of 2020, I received my Master of Education in School Counseling from Auburn University at Montgomery which is a CACREP accredited institution. Since graduation, I have practiced counseling in schools, non-profit organizations, and a group home, serving children and adolescents. I am licensed as a professional counselor in the state of Alabama and as a professional school counselor. I am a member of American Counseling Association, Association for Specialists in Group Work, and American School Counselor Association. I received a Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies with a minor in Psychology from Auburn University at Montgomery in December of 2017.
The counseling services that I deliver to the students at Pike Road School includes program development, individual counseling, classroom guidance, and group counseling. I collaborate with many people in the school system in order to meet the needs of the students and to promote career, academic, and social development. I use many counseling techniques while working with students. However, I focus on the humanistic therapy/theory and solution-focused brief therapy primarily.
My philosophy is that all of the students are going to become the best versions of themselves academically, socially, and emotionally. I believe that the students are going to become successful students as well as citizens who are able to create and fulfill their short and long term goals. The students are going be resilient, encouraged, motivated, cultivated, and cultured. Problem-solving and critical thinking skills are encouraged throughout the program in order for the students to be successful students and citizens. The main goal is for students to be autonomous and well prepared in order to pursue any goal they may have after graduation.
The counseling process reveals many benefits and some potential risks. The risks include a student experiencing strong feelings of sadness, anger, or guilt. Many of the risks are to be expected while making changes in their lives. The benefits are that the students will be able to become the best version of themselves while increasing many parts about themselves such as self-esteem and becoming great citizens after graduation.
I am committed to the professional relationships with the students at Pike Road School and I will maintain confidentiality about what occurs during sessions. However, there are circumstances where confidentiality cannot be maintained which include: if a student threatens to harm themselves or others, if I suspect child abuse, and/or if a court orders a release of records. Although, I will strive to protect the confidentiality of all students.
