Many religious people look to God for guidance and consolation. Especially in disastrous situations. In Yann Martel’s novel, Life of Pi, religion is one of the reasons for the survival of PI. Religion gives to Pi faith, hope and strength.
More keeping your faith shows how strong your faith in God is. Discuss some Hindu symbolism to describe how insignificant it feels, so “he murmured words of Muslim prayer and went back to sleep” (177). Praying is a sign of hope for Pi. Pi hopes to live all night and trusts God to keep him safe. Instead of being terrified, have God’s faith enough to be comforted in a very vulnerable state. In describing the religious rituals that he practices, he says that “faith in God is an openness, a letting go, a deep trust, an act of free love, but sometimes it was so difficult to love” (208). In Pi’s situation, it is natural to question God and to fear that no one takes care of him.
If he loses hope, then there is nothing to stop him simply giving up and dying. Pi is afraid of dying; Even if it wastes a vegetarian life, it does not mean that it will waste a life of faith in God. But after this, he says that his faith has always remained as “a luminous point of light in my heart” (209). Even when he contemplates the existence of God and his faith, he is determined not to lose hope and to move forward. Your hope is what keeps your trust intact and not be full of despair.
The instinct for survival and abandonment of Pi’s moral human self shows its strength to survive. In the darkest moment of Pi, he explains that “this was the terrible cost of Richard Parker, he gave me a life, mine, but at the cost of taking one”. He tore the meat from the man’s frame and broke his bones. He filled my nose with blood, Something in me died and never came back to life. “(255) Pi not only talks about killing another person, but talks about himself Every time Pi took off his life , he was killing a piece of Pi’s old self. When he killed the Frenchman, it was when Pi’s old self was killed and pure instinct took over, and Pi could only bear to remember so much He could enumerate the feelings , but does not enter into the effect of the horrible event in his psyche. This moment, more than any other in the text, seems to mark an absence of God because of his despair and his sense of guilt.
It is also the moment when Pi’s life is more explicitly threatened. If Richard Parker is seen as a symbol of pure survival instinct, this is the only moment in the text where that instinct completely overcomes morality and control. Describing the lack of food and water, Pi realizes how low the day was when I noticed, with a pinch of heart, that I ate like an animal, that my strong, frantic and carefree blinking was exactly the Richard Parker he ate. “(225) He is starting to connect with Richard Parker and himself, Pi’s subconscious constitutes Richard Parker because he does not want to connect and accept responsibility for his actions similar to animals, but when he starts to connect with Richard Parker and himself, he begins to realize that there is a connection and that in order to survive he must behave like an animal, even though he was a vegetarian, he threw him away and ate him badly because he wanted to survive.
Determination is the key to Pi’s survival and it’s what keeps him going. Pi says: “Did not you have here a perfect circus, inevitably circular, without a single corner to hide? … Was not this an ideal source of desserts to condition you to obey?” Then he continues to ask if there was “any greater reward than life”. All this shows how determined it is to survive. Begin to show confidence during the most chaotic and disastrous event of your life. Pi decided to “tame” Richard Parker so that he could “trick him before he died, if we were to get to that unfortunate question” (165). This also makes Pi a dominant attitude towards Richard Parker. When Richard Parker tames, Pi basically says that he is the alpha male. It makes him feel in control of his situation and of himself. In the second story, Pi is talking about checking his wild nature. Limiting your instincts makes you look more human. However, every story has a determination to survive. His strong faith in God, his superior tone, the determination to live, all sustains the presence of the will to survive. People have to sacrifice things to stay alive. For Pi he was sacrificing his morals and his vegetarianism. For others, it could be something different. But to survive, people have to sacrifice something to exist.
