The Monkey’s Paw is a short story by W.W. Jacobs includes a dark theme throughout the story.
Mood is the feeling the author wants to give you while reading the story
“Of all the beastly, slushy, out of the way places to live in, this is the worst. Path’s a bog, and the road’s a torrent”(pg.1)
In my quote mr.White talks about how they live in a bad horrible place.
This supports my claim for it emphasizing mood as it portrays the Whites as living in a bad place or rather a “beastly slushy out of the way place”
A cold wind rushed up the staircase, and a long loud wail of disappointment and misery from his wife(pg.4)
A long loud wail of disappointment is meant to imply that Mrs.white is deeply hurt emotionally.
This supports my claim as some words like disappointment expresses emotion which is commonly associated with mood.
The Monkey’s paw by W.W. Jacobs is a masterpiece when it comes to setting a mood correctly which is probably why so many still read it to this very day.
